Is it necessary to get my terms of employment in writing? Isn't a verbal contract enough?

We very strongly advocate the importance of an employment contract, including for working interviews. To avoid any misunderstandings, it is highly advisable to have a signed agreement between you and your employer. It only takes a few minutes, and it can save you and your employer a lot of frustration down the road.

This is especially true as the baby boomer generation retires, and practices are being sold with 'CDAs included'. You will want written proof of your current employment arrangement to bring to the new business owner. A verbal contact with the former employer may not hold water with your new employer.

CDABC offers a simple pre-made contract you can bring to your current employer, or if you are interviewing, to your prospective employer. It has all essential items an employment contract should contain. Visit the Employment Resources section of our site for your copy (you must be logged in as a current member for this link to work).
